Software Upgrades

This one may or may not be reletively easy... we have about 12 robots running right now with v2.1 software and are looking to upgrade these all to v3.0 software. What type of hardware requirements are we looking at? I'm sure we will need to upgrade some memory boards, etc. Does anyone have any experiance with this? Thanks for your reply.

  • Whats the reason for the uppdate? Was looking into this like ten years ago and it involved a lot of hardware. So it was almost cheaper to buy new robots.

  • We have two arguments for getting rid of v2.1, 1. It's an attempt at standardization. We have about half of our robots running v2.1, while the rest have a combination of 3.0-3.2 and a few 4.0. Management would like to get rid of the "obsolete" software versions. 2. The v2.1 software is very tweaky, sometimes on a hard stop or e-stop while welding the robot won't kill the weld sequence, so we've had to incorporate event routines to do so. Also the software crashes fairly often, requiring warm starts, and sometimes even cold boots. Depending on price (hopefully prices have come down on hardware over 10 years) we would really like to get rid of the headaches this software version brings.

  • Ok
After looking into some old mail you will probably be abel to upgrade 2.1 to 3.0 but some of them may need a bigger memory card. But you should get in contact with ABB and they will be able to tell what you need to do out of the serial number of the robots.

  • Thanks PerSvensson, after speaking with ABB and a few used robot dealers here is the minimum hardware needed:

    1. Main CPU- DSQC 325

    2. Computer- DSQC 326 (with upgraded EEPROM chips)

    3. External Memory- DSQC 317 (6MB)

This will only allow me to upgrade to v3.0, versions 3.1 and 3.2 are not compatible with the main CPU listed above.
