Quick question: get force reading

I am a new programmer, and I need to write a loop to do the following:
To slowly move my tool (basically a metal pin) down against my workpiece until the force reaches 100lb (445N). Then read the position data and set a robtarget to that position.
Is it possible to do this WITHOUT force control (i.e. simply read the force signal from the robot sensor plate and make the loop quit when it reaches 100lb)?
Thanks,
Ben
