970-1 and DSQC 1003

I am running an IRC5 Compact and looking to connect to an instrument through RS232. What does option 970-1 RS232 serial channel include? Could I upgrade my controller to include this? Would it be as simple as buying the DSQC 1003 expansion board and installing it?
