Externally guided motion only avaliable for 6 DOF robots, anyone know why?

Currently working on a project where we would like to control an IRB360 flexipicker with some real time input.

Looking through the Externally guided motion manual it states that it is only available for 6 dof robots. I was wondering if anyone might know exactly why this is? or if there might be some possible work around or other controller option I might be able to use for real time control.
