External driver as external axis

Hello,
I've been at a customer who wants to replace a hydralic cylinder with a motorized drive. They've already bought a driver with DeviceNET, but can you use this as an external axis or do you need to set some DO/GO to get it moving?
Since the robot lacks the DeviceNET option, I've told them to maybe skip this external drive and instead buy an external axis for the robot so you can manually jog the drive from the pendant. But since I've never used external axis' before I am not sure if this is the only way to define it as an external axis and to jog it from the pendant.
I would be very grateful if anyone with more experience on this matter could help me out!
