Maximum number of joints in custom mechanism?

I am trying to make a custom end effector tool in robot studio which has 36 joints (though I realistically I only need 28 to move for my simulation purposes), but it seems as though the custom mechanism functionality maxes out at 12 joints and after this point I get a "could not compile mechanism" error. Does anyone know how to get around this or of any good workarounds? I have tried making sub-mechanisms and attaching them to my main end effector, but it seems as though RS only wants to make links with geometries and not tools. I am at a loss on how to attach more joints or get the same functionality. Thanks in advance for the help.
