Smart Component w/ Lighting

I am building a library of smart components for use in our engineering and R&D offices. I am currently working on a component that has a lighting feature tied to an I/O signal. It works just fine in a station with just the smart component, but when I place the SC into another station, I lose all lighting effects. I've checked to ensure advanced lighting is enabled in the graphics options, but no luck.
What is the correct way to incorporate lighting into a smart component so that it carries over when added to another station?
