RS 5.10 Stability Problems

I was under the impression that 5.10 was mostly bug fixes, but I and several colleagues have experienced nothing but problems.  Mine started when I tried to change my display settings from 120 dpi to 96dpi (the bottom of the dialogs were being chopped off).  This made my existing station unusable, and RS crashed every time I tried to open it.  I was forced to go back to the previous setting.

I now have trouble saving files.  I can do a save on a station, but not save as...  I cannot save a tool as a library.  And the latest, when trying to import geometry, I get the following:

RobotStudio .NET exception dump
===============================
Base exception:
Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.
   at System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ThrowExceptionForHRIn ternal(Int32 errorCode, IntPtr errorInfo)

   at ABB.Robotics.RobotStudio.Stations.Part.Load(String fileName, ProgressNotification progressDelegate, Boolean surfaceModel, DetailLevels detail)
   at ABBInternal.FileCommands.FileCommandServices.ImportGeometryF iles()

I have re-installed RS twice, with no improvement.  My next step is to completely format my hard drive, and re-install XP and all my applications.

Is mine an isolated problem?  I have 16 or 17 dump files since the middle of February, and I was on vacation for 2 weeks.

  • Hi Jim,

    I am really sorry to hear about all your problems.

    As you probably already know, RobotStudio relies heavily on the graphics CPU and driver. There is an option in RobotStudio to select between OpenGL and Direct3D to use for the graphics renderer. Some users experience improved performance when selecting the one most appropriate for their system. When upgrading RobotStudio, this option is reset to OpenGL which is the default. Can you please try to change this to Direct3D, restart RobotStudio and see if you experience any improvement in stability?

    Unless this helps I would like you do a "Full Scan" using the RobotStudio support tool and send the zip file to me at

    henrik.berlin@se.abb.com

    Then we can analyse your error logs.

    Alternatively, you can get in touch with your local ABB representative that will take care of your support case. Unless he or she can solve the issue for you it will be forwared to our technical support team here in Gothenburg, Sweden. This will have the advantage of going through the official channel. As an advantage you can follow up on the progress of your specific issue with your local ABB representative.
