RS Online rapid editor

Hello,

I have recently upgraded to RS5.12 and am having some issues with the rapid editor.

I connect to the system through RS and then select the ONLINE tab at the top, gain write a permission and try to open the modules to edit.

When I try and open ROB1 or POS1 it fails and I get an error stating the following:

"An unhandled exception occured in Program Editor 5/27/2009 11:00:56 AM General "

"Failed to launch editor for module: 16-53123: T_ROB1/program_stn1 5/27/2009 11:00:56 AM RAPID"

However, I am able to open ROB2 and it will allow me to edit the program as needed.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

BR,

Adam

  • Can you post the copies of the files you are trying to open?

Can you open them from the Program Editor on the FlexPendant?
    Russell Drown
  • I am able to open all modules using the flex pendant (on the robot), the robot runs the routines no problem in auto and in manual. I just can't get it to open the editor on the laptop.

This is what i am trying to open, its a pretty simple set of programs.

FYI, this cell has 2 1600ID robots and a 250R positioner if that matters. I also have down loaded to my computer RS 5.12.3076.138

  • Can you try splitting the task 1 file into multiple modules or deleting stuff from it so that it is about the size of task 2? I suspect the problem may be due to the size of the file.

  • Russ:

    Thanks for the info!

I can try that, I will creat a couple new modules and save some of the info in there.

I still wonder about not being able to open the POS1 module, it is pretty small (see attached).

Also I tried it on an older system and it still faults out whne trying to open the editor.

    Thanks!

  • I tried loading all of your files and did not get the exception you reported. Did you restart Windows after the upgrade? I'm curious why you attached the files as *.txt, have you been editing them offline in some editor? Certain editors may put unexpected linefeed chars in files. If the problem continues to happen, I would recommend using the Robot Studio Support tool on the Start menu and submit the file along with a backup of your system to your local ABB support organization.

  • Russell,

I will be the first to admit that I am no expert in RS. Is there a better way that I should have attached these?

    THanks for your help,

    Note:
Not sure if you have fixed your problems yet but I had some very unexpected errors and behavior by RSO by writing code in a text editor and then copying into either RSO or the full version. I had to copy and paste it chunks to determine where the errors were because I had written so much outside of the software. It was so frustrating because, like you, I couldnt see where the errors were coming from.

    Just an FYI...

  • Hi Adam,

I was just suprised that it was not the files saved as *.mod files, but were rather saved as txt. Usually people just copy the files right off of the controller via FTP or save them as .mod files to their PC via RS. When I saw them saved as text that raised a flag that they might have been modified offline.

  • Russell,

I have not modified or created anything using the *txt format and tried loading back into the controller. I have only hooked up to the controller and tried to edit while connected through RS online on my computer.

I also tried spliting up the size of the module like you had suggested (actuall into 3) and it still fails to open.

Again, thanks guys for your suggestions!

  • Are you connected to the service port or the LAN port? Can you post a backup?
    Russell Drown
  • I will post a backup. Is that a prefered method to post a back up on here? I am connecting through the service port.

    Adam
  • Yes, just save the backup to your PC and then upload it here.

    Please see attached.

    Thank You,

    Adam
  • I am unable to reproduce the behavior you described. I had a system failures due to missing system inputs/outputs and reference errors due to missing signals, I don't know if this was due to using 5.10.04 on my end or what.

It seems like a condition unique to your PC, if the problem continues you may want to use the RS error reporting tool to generate a system dump and contact your local ABB support for more assistance.

  • I occasionally have a problem opening the editor in RS Online (5.12).  This seems to happen after I have been using it for an extended period of time.  Once that point is reached, I can't open any modules, and sometimes all the existing editor windows go away.

The only solution I've found is to delete the controller, and add it back in.  Once again, everything works okay.

  • Thanks for your efforts! I will be contacting ABB.

  •  Hi Adam,

Sometimes the error log from the support tool may give a hint to the cause of the problem. Please follow the instruction below and upload the zip.

"Generate a Full Scan with the RobotStudio Support Tool available next to
RobotStudio in the Start menu, save the report and attach it with your problem
description. (Click Start Programs ABB Industrial IT Robotics IT
RobotStudio RobotStudio Support Tool, click on Run Full Scan and then Save
    Report."
