UPS for IRC 5

 Dear All,

I want to ask about the IRC 5. Our customer ask us, to use UPS as energy bank for the controller. He used to place UPS in his PLCs on his factory, in order to reduce the error in PLC ( because when the electricity is not constant voltage, the UPS can protect and keep the PLC turn on.
I read from the manual that there is also a battery as backup energy bank in IRC 5. But, they still need a authentic proof that - if the voltage is not constant, IRC 5 still keep alive, and it's can't affect the life time for the controller. Has anybody can share about this?

Thank you.

  • Hello Carmila,

The battery backup you mentioned is actually a big capacitor that stores just enough power for the computer to use when the power is lost or shut off. The controller is making an image file of the system while it powers down, and uses that image file to boot up when power is restored. So, to answer you last question, the controller will not stay on if any power interruption occurs.

From the controls aspect, you would need a very large UPS to keep the controller on. You may have to have something monitoring the incoming voltage so that if any power is lost, the motors on the robot shut off and halt any motion.
