Impossible to snap on geometries edges

Good morning,

I have a lot of problem with imported geometries. In fact to avoid too much manipulation with many larges CAD files from parts to program, I asked my customer to send me directly *.stl and *.jt files exported from his CAD station.

I tried with *.jt, but can't import the files.
It was ok with *.stl, but I can't snap to any edges of the parts.

Could you tell me if there is some special settings to apply while exporting the CATpart files into *.stl, in order to have the complete usable geometry in RS?

Thank you

  • Hi,

STL contains only the triangles/mesh/tessellation and not the geometry. There is no information about edges in the STL file, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STL_%28file_format%29.

As for JT, RS only supports an old version (up to 6.4) which is not the current format, known as Open JT.

If you want to preserve information about the surface and edge geometry to use for e.g. snap mode, you must use a geometry format. RobotStudio comes with SAT format and can be extended with a CAD Converter. There is a dedicated converter for CATIA v5 available, ask your local ABB Robotics Sales representative for the current price.
