Can an S4C controlled robot be used on an IRC5

I am thinking of getting a used robot without a controller and a new controller. I would like to know if I can run into compatibility issues. For example: 

Can older S4C controller robots be used on the IRC5 controller? Are there any driver issues for older robots?

IRC5 Cabinets can be retrofitted onto some S4C+ robots and a few S4C robots but no S4 robots. The main issue is the physical connectors (harting plugs) between the robot and cabinet are different on the older robots. If the connectors are the same then all you need in the IRC5 controller is the drive string for an old robot and you need to set a parameter to use old SMB (serial measurement board).
