Add Motor Units/External Axes to a Separate Task

I am trying to add three motor units to a separate motion task than the robot. Creating a virtual controller from a layout says that the configuration is not supported. When I try to add the axes using the external axis wizard, it always adds them to the same task as the robot. Does anyone know how this can be done?
